LiveCode Community Edition
- Powerful, easy, development environment reminiscent of HyperCard and HyperStudio.
- Design is done using a card/stack/buttons metaphor.
- Development environment runs on Mac, Windows, and Linux.
- The accompanying scripting language is very much like speaking English, not a complicated foreign language (i.e. "get the first word of line two").
- Previously quite expensive, now (as a result of a successful KickStarter campaign) it has been taken open source and the LiveCode Community Edition is now free.
- Once created a solution can be deployed to OS X, Windows, Android, Linux.
- The open source licensing is not compatible with iOS licensing. Therefore, to deploy iOS you would need the $500/year Professional license. With an iOS Enterprise Developer license you MAY be able to deploy directly to your school's devices without going through the app store.
- A small sampling of products created using Livecode can be seen in this showcase.
- LiveCode has numerous online resources to help you get started. A good starting place is this three-minute introduction..
- Dr. David Brooks from UN-L is developing and will be .offering a mini-MOOC (massively open online course) this summer. No cost to access the materials, but you must officially register for the course at UN-L to receive credit and to enjoy the highest levels of interaction with the instructor.
- Unrelated to this course, if anyone is interested in being a part of a study/user group focused on learning LiveCode, contact me on Twitter at @pdlindgren . I am just starting to learn about it myself.
